Google searches spike around crisis management planning keywords

With the COVID crisis impairing and impacting almost every industry sector, albeit in weird and not-so-wonderful ways, we'd expect to see an increase in the rollout of crisis responses.

However, recent data analysis suggests that many Aussie businesses were significantly unprepared for COVID-related crises, at least according to an analysis of Google searches.

Research by our crisis simulation technology The Drill - and our pals at search marketing specialists Simple Digital - shows that Google searches for crisis management and crisis planning terms leapt by a whopping 700% in mid-March 2020, as entities scrambled to find plans, processes or professionals to help them cope with a fresh influx of business issues or threats.

The spike in Google searches ranged from terms including 'crisis management' all the way through to 'crisis response', and likely reflected the unprecedented need for crisis support and crisis plans to help organisations navigate rapid COVID impacts with effective crisis planning templates and crisis response materials. Such a seven-fold spike also implies that existing planning and crisis response capabilities were deemed to be found wanting or not fit-for-purpose for the types of pressures presented by COVID.

Crisis planning specialist Gerry McCusker, owner of The Drill crisis management planning software commented:

"A 700% hike indicates an alarming level of unpreparedness as, ideally, businesses should know their crisis plans and processes BEFORE crisis hits, not afterwards".

While Google search volumes for crisis management keywords and tags have levelled off since the mid-March peak, fresh SEO analysis shows that many crisis-related search terms are still running at an average of around 470% higher than prior to the COVID outbreak, suggesting the scramble for crisis management experts and crisis response plans, still remains a 'live' issue in Australia.
